In 1218, Archbishop Eberhard II of Salzburg established the Bishopric of Seckau within the boundaries of his diocese. In 1859, the Bishopric of Leoben which had been created in 1786 was incorporated. Graz has been the bishop’s see since 1786. The territory of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau corresponds to the territory of the province of Styria.
