The National Library of Scotland is the legal deposit library of Scotland and is one of the country's National Collections. As one of the largest libraries in the United Kingdom, it is a member of Research Libraries UK and the Consortium of European Research Libraries.

Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives (United Kingdom)

Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives exists to collect, preserve, promote and provide access to the historical records of Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council, together with other significant records relating to North East Scotland. By doing this, the Archives aims to support the culture, heritage, economy, and communities of North East Scotland; and the ongoing business of Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council.

Angus Archives (United Kingdom)

Angus Archives is a vast collection of items covering 800 years of the history of Angus and its people. The archives house and preserve the written, printed and photographic history. We hold information on the towns of Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Montrose and Monifieth, plus the villages of Edzell, Letham, Friockheim and Newtyle. Resources include burgh records and Angus County Council records, school and poor relief records, as well as private records such as diaries, legal documents, and plans.

Argyll and Bute Council Archives (United Kingdom)

The Archives (Records Office) holds and preserves the official records of Argyll and Bute Council and also the records of the organisations whose functions the Council inherited. These organisations include: the Commissioners of Supply, parish councils, burgh councils, schools, school boards, Argyll County Council and Bute County Council. They tell the story of how Argyll and Bute has developed over the centuries and many contain the stories of individual people who lived here. Our oldest record is the Rothesay Charter, which dates from 1400. Our newest records are the reports and agendas used in Council meetings today. We also provide accommodation for records created by private individuals, estates, solicitors, businesses and clubs located within the area of Argyll and Bute Council. These private records are often held on indefinite loan and remain the property of the person or institute depositing them.

Edinburgh City Archives (United Kingdom)

We hold the historical records of the City of Edinburgh Council and its previous authorities. We also collect records which relate to the Edinburgh area created by clubs, societies, individuals, businesses and organisations. Our aim is to preserve these records and make them available to members of the public.

Clackmannanshire Archives (United Kingdom)

Historical records relevant to the Scottish county, former Clackmannanshire, Clackmannan District, the old Alloa, Alva, Dollar and Tillicoultry burghs and the Alloa and Hillfoots district councils. Within these holdings there are major runs of material such as local authority minutes, letter books, school log books and Valuation and Assessment Rolls, former Patons & Baldwins operations and the Johnstone of Alva estate papers.

Hebridean Archives (Tasglann nan Eilean) (United Kingdom)

Tasglann nan Eilean is the archive service of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council). Along with Museum nan Eilean, it forms part of the Comhairle's Heritage Service. Tasglann is responsible for the historical records of the Comhairle and its predecessors, as well as those of other organisations and individuals connected to the Western Isles which have been gifted or deposited.

Dumfries and Galloway Council Archives (United Kingdom)

We hold records that tell the story of over 600 years of Dumfries and Galloway's history. These include official records and those of individuals, families, businesses and institutions. We hold three major groups of records: 1) Dumfries and Galloway Council and its predecessors, from 1425 onwards; 2) Dumfries and Galloway Health Board and its predecessors, from 1775 onwards; 3) Gifts and deposits, from 1418 onwards.

Dundee City Archives (United Kingdom)

Dundee City Archives holds the records of Dundee City Council and its predecessors, including: Dundee District Council; Dundee Town Council/Corporation; Tayside Regional Council. We also accept records of businesses, societies and families relating to the City of Dundee as gifts or deposits.

Ayrshire Archives (United Kingdom)

Ayrshire Archives is the local authority archive service for South Ayrshire Council, East Ayrshire Council and North Ayrshire Council. The Ayrshire Archives Service was established in 1996 by the three Ayrshire councils to preserve and make accessible Ayrshire’s documentary heritage. The archive service looks after and provides access to records of historical importance belonging to the three local authorities and their predecessors, as well as private records that relate to the historical development of Ayrshire and Arran. Ayrshire Archives covers the whole of Ayrshire including the Cumbraes and Arran and our collections are located at various repositories across Ayrshire. The oldest record we hold is the Burgh Charter for the Town of Ayr, dated 1205, and signed by William the Lion, King of Scotland.

East Dunbartonshire Council Archives (United Kingdom)

East Dunbartonshire Archives Service collects and preserves the historical records of East Dunbartonshire and its people, covering the towns of Kirkintilloch, Lenzie, Bishopbriggs, Bearsden, Milngavie, Westerton, Lennoxtown, Milton of Campsie, Torrance, Baldernock and Twechar.

East Lothian Council Archives (United Kingdom)

At the John Gray Centre, the East Lothian Council Archives service and the Local History Centre come together to collect, care for and make accessible the historical records of the county. As a result we hold a large collection of original source material stretching back 700 years. The collection includes manuscripts, maps, books and images relating to many aspects of East Lothian history. We are also the repository for records of East Lothian Council and its predecessors.

East Renfrewshire Council Archives (United Kingdom)

Giffnock Heritage Centre holds archives of prior local authorities of the area. Historical newspapers, microfilm copies of the census for East Renfrewshire 1841-1901 and Old Parish Registers for Eastwood, Mearns and Cathcart parishes, valuation rolls, a local history book collection, a map collection and information files. Barrhead, Neilston & Uplawmoor areas. Resources available onsite include: Historical newspapers, microfilm copies of the census for Barrhead, Neilston & Uplawmoor and the Old Parish Registers for Neilston Parish, a local history book collection, maps and information files.

Falkirk Council Archives (United Kingdom)

Falkirk Archives is located at Callendar House. Its purpose is to preserve the history of local life in the Falkirk Council area. The Archives is open free of charge, and you can use it to research Falkirk's past and your family history.

Fife Archives - OnFife (United Kingdom)

OnFife Archives looks after documents covering an incredible 500 years of the history of Fife in Scotland.

Glasgow City Council Archives (United Kingdom)

Our collections contain a range of resources documenting Glasgow past and can be accessed from the Archives Search Room on Level 5 at The Mitchell Library.

Highland Archive Centre (United Kingdom)

The Highland Archive Centre, located in Inverness, United Kingdom, houses archives relating to the history of the Highlands. Collections date back to the 14th century and cover the counties of Inverness, Nairn, Ross and Cromarty and Sutherland.

Lochaber Archive Centre (United Kingdom)

Located in Fort William, United Kingdom, the Lochaber Archive Centre holds records pertaining to Highland history, with records of Lochaber dating from the 17th century to the present.

Nucleus: The Nuclear and Caithness Archive (United Kingdom)

Nucleus: The Nuclear and Caithness Archive is located in Wick, United Kingdom at the Wick Airport. Archives of the United Kingdom civil nuclear industry, as well as historical archives of Caithness County, are held here.

Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre, Portree (United Kingdom)

As part of the Highland Archive Service, the Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre in Portree is responsible for archives relating to Skye and Lochalsh. The records date from the 17th century to the present, and are strongest from the mid-19th century.

Inverclyde Council Archives (United Kingdom)

Inverclyde Archives cares for a rich and varied collection of archival material spanning over 300 years of Inverclyde's history. The collection includes business, clubs, organisational and personal records as well as records of the former Burghs of Greenock, Gourock and Port Glasgow.

Midlothian Council Archives (United Kingdom)

Midlothian Council holds a large collection of historical records about the local area. Many of the records are unique making the collection invaluable if you are interested in the history and culture of Midlothian, including family history. Moray Council Museums and Archives (United Kingdom)

The Local Heritage Centre is the place of deposit for archive collections held by The Moray Council. Archives are stored, catalogued, conserved in accordance with professional archive standards.

North Ayrshire Council Archives (United Kingdom)

North Ayrshire Council Archives comprises of research materials from Skelmorlie, Largs, Fairlie, West Kilbride, Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Stevenston, Irvine, Dreghorn, Kilwinning, Dalry, Kilbirnie, Beith and the Isles of Arran and Cumbrae. Special collections also include: 4,000 volumes relating to Ayrshire or written by people from Ayrshire from the 18th and 19th centuries, it includes an extensive Burns collection, the Cunninghames of Auchenharvie Estate Papers, historical newspapers, maps and photography archive.

North Lanarkshire Archives (United Kingdom)

North Lanarkshire Archives collects and preserves the historical records of North Lanarkshire, covering the areas of Airdrie, Bellshill, Coatbridge, Cumbernauld, Kilsyth, Motherwell, Shotts, Stepps and Wishaw. This unique resource is there for you to use – free of charge.

Renfrewshire Council Archives (United Kingdom)

Renfrewshire Council Archives contain census records, OPRs, Electoral registers and voters rolls, Paisley weavers, hammermen, tailors records, monumental inscriptions and mortcloth, Poll tax rolls, hearth tax records, poor law, trade directories. Title deeds, books and journals, cain of Lochwinnoch, Council minutes, Maps, newspapers, Paisley pamphlets, postcards, sasines.

Shetland Council Archives (United Kingdom)

The Shetland Archives holds records of Shetland’s local authorities from the 18th century onwards: Lerwick Town Council (1818-), Zetland County Council (1890-) and its predecessors, and Shetland Islands Council (1974-).

South Lanarkshire Council Archives and Records Centre (United Kingdom)

Our Archives and Information Management Service, based at the South Lanarkshire Council Archives and Records Centre, is responsible for the selection and preservation of records and archives relating to the South Lanarkshire area.
