We have genealogists who perform in-depth research in the Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Long at the center of inquiry into the history and culture of the American South, the Southern Historical Collection (SHC) is a vast collection of distinct archival collections. These collections are comprised of unique primary documents, including:
- Oral histories
- Moving images
- Literary manuscripts
Though its strength is Civil War and earlier records collections, the library does not just contain southern states collections. It also has manuscripts from the United Kingdom, Texas railroad records, among other collections.
You can search the Manuscripts Department website or check out their online finding aids. Select collections have been digitized. If the one you seek is, this will be clear on the finding aid page for that collection. If no links to digital material are provided in a finding aid, the collection can only be accessed in person (or via microfilm).
We’ll search records for you and email you digital images of what we find.
Research fees in the Wilson Library University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill begin at $300 per project.
