The regional church archive in Magdeburg manages the historical records of the former Evangelical Church in the ecclesiastical province of Saxony within the Evangelical Church in Central Germany (EKM). The latter merged in 2009 with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia to form the EKM and is thus only a historical entity. It once comprised the area of the former Prussian province of Saxony and extended to large parts of most of Saxony-Anhalt (excluding Anhalt) Thuringia as well as smaller peripheral areas of the states of Brandenburg and Saxony.
