The first government archival institution, the Central National Archives, was founded in Cherkasy in April 1919. The Cherkasy District Archives were founded in 1925. With the abolition of districts in September 1930, the Cherkasy District Archives were reorganized into the Cherkasy District Archival Administration in October of 1930. In 1932, it was reorganized into the Cherkasy State Historical Archives, which became a branch of Kyiv Region State Archives in 1941. It incurred great losses during Nazi occupation of Cherkasy.
