Departmental Archives of Gard (Archives Départementales du Gard) (France)

Created under the French Revolution by the law of 5 Brumaire year V (October 26, 1796), the role of the Departmental Archives is to bring together in a single place the papers coming from the Prefecture, the General Council, the administrations, the jurisdictions of the Old Regime, those of suppressed religious establishments, emigrated or condemned families, individuals, companies and associations.

Archives Nationales (Pierrefitte-sur-Seine) (France)

The Archives Nationales (French: Archives nationales de France), also known as the French Archives or the National Archives, preserve the official archives of France apart from the archives of the Ministry of the Armies and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as these two ministries have their own archive services, the Defence Historical Service (Service historique de la défense) and Diplomatic Archives (Archives diplomatiques) respectively. The Archives Nationales have one of the largest and most important archival collections in the world, a testimony to the very ancient nature of the French state which has been in existence for more than twelve centuries already.

National Archives, Paris (Musée des Archives Nationales) (France)

It is housed in the Hôtel de Soubise in the Marais neighborhood in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris, France.

Departmental Archives of Vaucluse (Archives Départementales de Vaucluse) (France)

This documentary and cultural historical centre is located in part of the Popes Palace. It is home to 20 linearly kilometres of documents ranked in series. The oldest document dates back to 898.

Departmental Archives of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (Archives Départementales des Alpes de Haute-Provence) (France)

The Departmental Archives were created by the law of 5 Brumaire year V (October 26, 1796) which orders the meeting in the chief towns of the departments of all titles and papers acquired to the Republic. They are first of all made up of the archives of the administrations of the Ancien Régime suppressed during the Revolution, of those of ecclesiastical establishments and of emigrant families.

Departmental Archives of Ardèche (Archives Départementales de l'Ardèche) (France)

The Ardèche Departmental Archives library was created in 1867. In the absence of classified libraries in the departmental territory, it is the most important heritage library: more than 60,000 documents make it possible to discover the works devoted to Vivarais and Ardèche, and all those who, dealing or not dealing with Ardèche, were published by Ardéchois, by birth or residence. This local, administrative and heritage collection is rich in old, rare and precious works such as incunabula (the first printed books), the oldest of which dates from the end of the 15th century.

Departmental Archives of Var (Archives Départementales du Var) (France)

The Var departmental archives keep nearly 20 linear km of documents. The oldest, on parchment, dates from 1136. It is a papal bull promulgated by Pope Innocent II (1130-1143) relating to a right granted to the collegiate church of Pignans on the use of a chapel. The collections of the Departmental Archives of Var are particularly rich in terms of notarial archives and municipal archives. The oldest notary register comes from Cabasse and dates from 1280. 80 municipalities out of 153 have deposited part of their archives, some of which date back to the Middle Ages; the oldest piece, which comes from the Barjols archives, dates from 1214.

Departmental Archives of Bouches-du-Rhône (Archives Départementales des Bouches-du-Rhône) (France)

The modern and contemporary archives are the records produced by the public administrations of the department from 1800 to the present day: the services of the State and those of the General then Departmental Council. This period begins with the coup d etat of Napoleon Bonaparte of 18 Brumaire Year VIII, a major political break that ends the period of the French Revolution.

From their creation in 1796 to their installation in the pierrevives departmental domain in Montpellier in 2012, the history of the Hérault departmental archives is written through sites and people. Always located in Montpellier, originally in part of the prefecture, the Archives migrated to the premises of the Grand Séminaire (former Récollets convent) in 1911 and then to Pierrevives in 2012. Over the centuries, the Archives saw their funds and their missions grow and diversify .
