The Archives Nationales have one of the largest and most important archival collections in the world, a testimony to the very ancient nature of the French state which has been in existence for more than twelve centuries already.

The Departmental Archives preserve the memory of the Marne department and its inhabitants. Departmental Archives of Calvados (Archives Départementales du Calvados) (France)

Founded by the law of 5 Brumaire Year V, the Archives du Calvados benefited from 1867 from a dedicated building adjoining the prefecture on rue Saint-Laurent, designed by the architect Marcotte. An extension was added in 1930 to accommodate the reading room, while the old Church of the Sepulcher was used as an annex conservation area from 1932. Miraculously spared by the bombings of June with the collections it contained, the building was destroyed in 1966 to accommodate the modern wing of the prefecture, the current headquarters of the department.

Departmental Archives of Var (Archives Départementales du Var) (France)

The Var departmental archives keep nearly 20 linear km of documents. The oldest, on parchment, dates from 1136. It is a papal bull promulgated by Pope Innocent II (1130-1143) relating to a right granted to the collegiate church of Pignans on the use of a chapel. The collections of the Departmental Archives of Var are particularly rich in terms of notarial archives and municipal archives. The oldest notary register comes from Cabasse and dates from 1280. 80 municipalities out of 153 have deposited part of their archives, some of which date back to the Middle Ages; the oldest piece, which comes from the Barjols archives, dates from 1214.

Departmental Archives of Aube (Archives Départementales de l'Aube) (France)

The department of Aube was born with the French Revolution, in 1790. The Departmental Archives were created in 1796, with the aim of collecting the archives of the institutions of the Ancien Régime. An archive repository is set up in each departmental capital. A decree dating from 1794 defines their missions as follows: to collect, classify, preserve and communicate the documents entrusted to them. Any citizen has the right to obtain consultation on site, within the time limits imposed by each depot. Communication of documents must be free. The Ardèche Departmental Archives library was created in 1867. The Departmental Archives have been a service of the Departmental Council since 1986. Their mission is to preserve the collective memory of the Ardennes so as to offer it to everyone. From their creation in 1796 to their installation in the pierrevives departmental domain in Montpellier in 2012, the history of the Hérault departmental archives is written through sites and people.
